I feel lucky to have friends in the creative field who inspire me to take risks and make art as often as I can. About once a month, I plan a fashion editorial just for the thrill of creating and connecting with others. This past month, my good friend Bronté mentioned she wanted to plan a shoot at Upper Cataract Falls while it was still frozen. We thought it would be an excellent idea to go together and shoot our respective concepts.
I asked Olivia to model for me in this fashion ice editorial. I had met her a month prior when I shot her family photos. She had the perfect look to exude the vibe I wanted to convey in this shoot! I also asked Kaylee Williamson from The Rock Agency to style the shoot. We wanted to go for a relaxed, yet tailored high-fashion look.
The day before the shoot, Kaylee told me an unique attraction would be on the way to the frozen waterfall. Veal’s Ice Tree has been a family tradition since 1961. It is a man-made tree that is built every year by the Veal family. They use nearby pond water to help build the structure and occasionally spray non-toxic food coloring to jazz it up. We decided the additional stop would be worth it.
Apart from Olivia accidentally locking her keys in her car, Veal’s Ice Tree was a smashing success. I love the “ice queen” dress that Kaylee had picked out for this location. The subtle sparkle added to the grander-than-life aura of the tree.
Then, it was off to shoot more fashion looks at Upper Cataract Falls. The four of us slipped and scooted down the 15 minute hike to the waterfall. The scenery was breathtaking, but we only had about an hour of optimal light left! We took turns bundling up and then quickly shooting inside and around the gorgeous falls.
The ice cave took my breath away when I first saw it. Olivia picked up one of the fallen icicles and posed with the prop. I love how the final look came together from the icy blue fashion pieces to the frozen landscape all around us.
I want to thank Kaylee for styling this look, Bronté for inviting me along to this location, and Olivia for being an absolute trooper to continue the editorial even though she was locked out of her car! Luckily, AAA saved the day at the end of the shoot. Congrats to all for being published in Shuba Magazine Issue 56 Volume 10.
